Listen to the 4-minute song “Chairman Gou”—the founder and CEO of Foxconn.
The song is about Lu Xin, 24-year-old Chinese rural migrant worker, who committed suicide at the Foxconn factory in Shenzhen city on 6 May 2010. He was certified dead onsite. By the end of May, Foxconn’s CEO Terry Gou brought in psychiatrists to offer phone advice to depressed workers. Chairman Gou also installed “safety nets” to deter employees from jumping off a building.
Lyrics
[Intro]
Terry found a body on the ledge
No one would have guessed and nobody did
Never had a chance to talk him off
Pay the right man to build a suicide net
[Verse 1]
Lu Xin stood to sing a song
Coins to feed the karaoke machine
Open your mouth to feel loud
We’ll make a little money and find a way out
[Chorus]
Lu Xin won the company-singing contest
I tried to grab him
Lu Xin won the company-singing contest
[Verse 2]
Chairman Gou would make the toast
We found a fix to the bloody young mess
Hire a hundred telephones
To talk the kids out of meaninglessness
[Chorus]
Lu Xin won the company-singing contest
I tried to grab him
Lu Xin won the company-singing contest
我的手机 Wǒ de shǒujī [My phone]
